What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback, or Neurotherapy, is a type of biofeedback that uses real-time displays of electroencephalography (EEG) to show brain activity. The EEG identifies specific imbalances or dysfunction in the brain. Neurofeedback programs can help alter the brain wave frequencies to promote optimal performance.
How does it work?
Sensors are placed on specific areas of the scalp using a conductive paste. Wires leading from the sensors are then connected to a computer which measures and records brain wave frequencies and activity. The EEG is then analyzed to determine specific areas of imbalance in the brain. The procedure is painless and non-invasive.
How do you train the brain?
Once the EEG is analyzed, sensors are placed on the scalp over the area to be trained. The computer is programmed to reward the brain for increasing or suppressing specific brain waves in targeted areas of the brain using either video or music rewards. When the desired brain waves are enhanced, the video advances or the music plays. The video or music is fully controlled by the person’s brain. Over time, the brainwave activity is trained to act in a more desirable and regulated manner.
What are some of the benefits of Neurofeedback?
- Cognitive Enhancement
- Enhanced Learning
- Enhanced Sports and Artistic Performance
- Stress Reduction
- Improved Attention, Focus and Concentration
- Emotional Stability and Mood Support
- Improved Sleep
- Reduction in Addictive Behavior
In May, 2013, The American Academy of Pediatrics recognized Neurofeedback as being as effective as medication for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Neurofeedback was rated the “level 1 best support treatment” for ADHD.
